Dr. Andrew Nicholson completed his PhD in Neuroscience at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He subsequently completed two post-doctoral fellowships at Homewood Research Institute (HRI) and the University of Vienna, Austria.

Dr. Nicholson’s research is characterized by brain imaging studies in the field of psychiatric medicine, utilizing a wide range of technical methods including real-time fMRI neurofeedback, dynamic causal modelling, and most recently, the application of machine learning algorithms to predict psychiatric illness. His research focuses on examining differential biomarkers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using neuroimaging methods, as well as examining trans-diagnostic biomarkers of other psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Nicholson and others in his research network are developing novel brain computer interfaces to be used as adjunctive treatments for PTSD to help patients learn to regulate brain states associated with symptoms voluntarily. He is currently examining randomized clinical trials of neurofeedback in PTSD. Nicholson’s lab is also interested in investigating the neural underpinnings of minority stress and its relation to mental illness risk and resiliency.
