Chief of Interventional Psychiatry Services at Homewood Health Centre

Dr. El-Gaaly is Chief of Regional Services, Comprehensive Psychiatry Care & Assessment Stabilization Unit (CPC/ASU) and Chief of Interventional Psychiatry Services at Homewood Health Centre. Since joining the Homewood team in March of 2022 Dr. El-Gaaly initiated and developed the IV Ketamine Clinic leading to the creation of Interventional Psychiatry Services, combining ECT, rTMS, and IV Ketamine under one umbrella. 

Dr. El-Gaaly holds appointment to Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University.  He has a strong interest in Mood Disorders, with a specific interest in treatment resistant depression, and Ketamine treatment for depression and other psychiatric disorders. His other interests include interventional psychiatry, neuro-modulation treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as well as the use of psychedelic therapy in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders.   

Dr. El-Gaaly completed his medical school and post-graduate Master’s Degree in Neurology and Psychiatry in Cairo, Egypt, and subsequently completed his Psychiatry residency at the University of Manitoba. 

Dr. El-Gaaly worked as a Psychiatrist and was the Medical Director and Head of Psychiatry at the Victoria General Hospital (VGH) site in Manitoba for close to 10 years. During his tenure, he was involved in the development of the Post-Emergency Follow-up Clinic as well as their Rapid Assessment Clinic (RAC). Since 2017, he served as the Assistant Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba, St. Boniface Hospital Site. He was an active member of the Mental Health Steering Committee that was involved in the consolidation of the Psychiatry hospital sites in Manitoba and was involved in a major expansion of the Psychiatry Department at VGH as well as being involved in the development of the Geriatric Fellowship Program VGH, University of Manitoba. Dr. El-Gaaly has held the position of Assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba since 2012 and has been very much involved in the education of medical learners, including spearheading the development of the core outpatient rotation for Psychiatry residents as well as being site Program Director for Psychiatry Residents at University of Manitoba from 2012 to 2020.  

The Professional Association of Residents and Interns of Manitoba awarded the Educator of the Year Award to Dr. El-Gaaly in 2017/2018 to recognize his academic/teaching contributions.
